When you set down to write new songs, do you find yourself coming up with the music first and that inspires the words, or do you have a poem, lyric, or hook that comes to mind and you build a song off of that?
I've done both - but typically, I'll start with a progression and then add lyrics to that.
Usually the music is always first for me. I've had tunes I wrote the music arrangement for, then tried writing lyrics a few times to it with ZERO luck... Then, finally after 7-8 years I found the right topic or subject and words... A lot of times, I can get the hook lyrics the quickest and easiest, then the verses usually somewhat write themselves... That's how I goes for me, about 80-90% of the time...
@jimwizard - Getting the hook would definitely be a great start.. Hey listened to your song - nice job.. One thing I was 'hearing' - that may change it a bit but give it more of a 'love' feel. Change your I and IV chords to Maj7 chords instead of the straight Maj chord. Not sure of the key - but instead of "CMaj" - use a CMaj7 (Lift your finger off the high B string and play the chord.. (Makes it a Maj7... Same on the IV chord - in the Key of C, the IV is the F.. you can do the same by letting the High E string ring out and remove the 1st fret .. getting an FMaj7..
Other keys - same principle. take the highest tonic note and back it down 1 fret...
Just a thought.. but good stuff and thanks for sharing
